These companies borrowed their names from dogs. Seriously!

There are dogs named after popular movie characters. And then, there are famous brands that were named after pets

Dogs have inspired the human race for centuries in more ways than one. There are gazillion tales of furry friends inspiring and spurring their masters to greatness. So, men naming their companies after their pets, specifically dogs, might just be an extension to that.

One of the most recent would be the moniker of an American video game developer. An American Bulldog so cultured that she used to dine at a chair and table, and attend its master, Mark Pincus’s conferences, inspired him so much to name his company after her. If you haven’t guessed the name of the company yet, it is Zynga (after Zinga the Bulldog).

Another intriguing case is that of Francis Barraud, an English painter. Upon the demise of his brother Mark, Francis gained possession of a phonograph player with recordings of Mark’s voice. He also inherited Mark’s  Jack Russel Terrier, Nipper, which grew curious over his long-lost owner’s voice flowing out of the gramophone’s horn. Francis got so moved by the imagery that he sketched it as His Master’s Voice (HMV). The painting would be bought by the Gramophone Company, which rebranded itself as HMV after eight years.

Do you know from where Laika Entertainment, the Portland-headquartered animation studio borrowed its name? Full marks if Laika the Mongrel from USSR, which shot to fame as the first animal to orbit the Earth, popped up on your mind.
We are sure more and more companies would be named after pets in the coming years. Don’t you agree?
